Before making any important purchase, it’s important to get all the relevant information. It’s the same for anyone buying an EV. Check out these questions to understand if buying an EV is the right move for you.
Does It Have Enough Range?
Most EVs today offer about 200 miles of range. Teslas are the only ones with over 300 miles of range on offer. So work out how much you drive every day.
Can It Be Charged at Home?
Yes. You can charge your EV using a standard 110V wall outlet or have a 240V Level 2 charger installed at home to charge up your EV in about eight hours.
How Much Does Charging Cost?
The average price of electricity is 13.28 cents per kWh. As compared to a gas vehicle, EVs will always cost less money to run. There are even utility plans for EV owners.
Are There Public Charging Stations Close By?
Public charging stations are either Level 2 or fast DC chargers. The latter can charge EVs to 80% in 30 minutes. So before you buy one, check if there are charging stations near your home, work, or on your commute route.
Can I Take It on Road Trips?
All EVs can be taken on road trips. You just need to plan the route and charging time-based on your EV’s range and charging capability. Or rent a gas-powered car for road trips.
What Incentives Can I Get?
The federal government offers a $7,500 tax credit on some EVs. States, cities, lenders, and insurers offer their own incentives. Do your research to see what you qualify for.
New or Used?
New EVs are more expensive than gas-powered equivalents. But they depreciate rapidly and are cheaper as used options. But incentives to buy a new EV are higher.
Buy or lease?
Buying is a good decision as long as you can afford it. Leasing is popular because you get a new car with the latest tech. It all depends on how long you plan on keeping the EV.
What Maintenance Is Needed?
EVs need less maintenance than gas-powered cars because they have fewer moving parts and virtually no fluids to change.
